Broadway Theaters may be closed...
But the streets are the backdrop for the new democracy of theater
But the streets are the backdrop for the new democracy of theater
NYC Street Theater was founded by actress, dancer, and activist, Alissa Bush in August of 2020
in response to the devastating impact of the global pandemic on the character, culture, and leadership of one of the greatest cities in the world.
New York City has long been recognized as an epicenter of the creative arts. For the first time in over half a century Broadway, Off-Broadway, and some of the greatest music and performing arts venues in the world closed. Over 95,000 actors and supporting staff lost their jobs overnight. As the ripple effects of the economic collapse continue, moving vans have become the most common sight in NYC, marking the largest exodus from the city since its founding nearly four centuries ago.
NYC Street Theater is here to put creative life back into the city. As a synergistic community of actors, directors, producers, and activists, we see the opportunity to take this moment of economic pause, to bring creative voice and expression back into the limelight.
The human spirit has an irrepressible unity, hope, and joyful laughter, and always holds an expectation of possibility...
While the old world runs and hides, we are here to spark a new heartbeat for a new world.
Join us in a street near you to celebrate the human spirit, and our collective capacity to rise.
